To All Branches

Swansea Valley Miners Appeal Fund

Branches will be aware of the recent tragic events that took place, regarding the deaths of the four miners at Gleision Colliery in the Swansea Valley. This was the worst mining accident Wales has seen for generations.

Peter Hain MP along with the South Wales Branch of the NUM has launched an appeal in support of the miner’s families at this very difficult time.  The fund launch statement reads as follows:

“The Fund will support the families of the victims who need help to survive and recover in the future. The Fund is in the process of becoming a registered charity. In the meantime, however, we are not eligible for Gift Aid on donations received. However, we are grateful to the Government for agreeing to make a donation to the Fund equivalent to what could have been received through Gift Aid (25% on all donations).”

The CWU South West Wales Amal branch has written requesting CWU branches and individuals to support this appeal.  Accordingly CWU HQ will be taking steps to make an appropriate donation and urges all Branches to consider helping in whatever way they can.
